It’s A Party
Topic: Family Life | 8 Comments »What happens when you throw chocolate cake, kids and balloons into one room? Screaming, yelling, balls flying around and tired parents. Thank goodness my daughters first birthday party had only two one year old girls (including her) and a two month old baby girl. None of them can walk yet but they can get cake everywhere.

First Birthday
I still cannot believe she is one. Time goes by faster and faster the older I get. I am not even half way to retirement and already life feels like it is zooming past me like an Indy car. By the time I retire I will be wearing a crash helmet.
More and more I am realizing how little other things in life are important, other than people. Yes, I would still like a sports car, big house, a cabin out by the lake and a speed boat and in fact I will continue to work hard for these things. The point is though that working for these things is not my priority. Family always comes first.
I would rather spend time sitting on the floor playing with blocks with my little girl or going for a walk with my wife and daughter than I would riding a speed boat with no memories made of my daughter and wife.
Some people say that people with lots of money are unhappy. The problem is that I also know lots of people with no money that are unhappy. You can’t tell me that people in 3rd world nations are happy when they can’t afford to feed their own children.
Money is not the source of happyness, therefore money is also not the source of unhappyness. Being happy in life is more of a decission that we make. This next year of my daugters life and every other year I want to make the most memories with her as I can. I want her to know me as a happy dad and someone that when she leaves home she will always want to come back, visit and still have fun with.

Great post Orlund. Your “little” family is so neat. You made some very good points (about money).
Yes – to create memories and family traditions is so important.
The first year does go by quickly…and then before you now it, they are in school and speaking french at the dinner table too quickly for you to follow!
My kids have the Mama Mia soundtrack and they keep singing “Money, money, money. It’s a rich man’s world.” But I know a few very lonely rich men. On the other hand, being able to pay the bills sure relieves a lot of stress!
By the way, I cannot find your wife’s blog. Could you direct me?

Noooo, not French. I only know is the words to a song but I don’t know what it means other than its about big fish eating small. Her blog is: Jenn and Orlund’s Adentures.
Great post!

I agree with you. That’s one of the reason I work for myself at home. I earn a lot less, but I get to see my kids during the day.

I would love to work from home. I like being out with people at work but I could easily give that up. Maybe some day I will be come some sort of consultant or something and get paid a couple hundred dollars to work from home and give advise over the phone.
She’s ONE already??? Time really does fly.
She looks adorable in that photo
Thanks. Yes, time flies fast. Feels like she was just born yesterday. I don’t feel like I am a dad of a one year old yet. Feels kind of strange telling people that my daughter is one.
