I broke my leg this last week. I was quickly trying to shovel snow before work and I twisted weird and slipped. I heard a loud snap when I fell. I screamed so loud my wife inside heard and a neighbour came running over too.

The funny part is my broken leg was straight but my good leg was kind of twisted as I was trying to get up so the neighbour kept looking at my good leg and said it looked broken. I crawled to a dry part of my drive way because I didn’t want to try standing on the ice again. Our neighbor helped me into the car. While I was waiting in the car I was trying to email a co-worker but it took a while because I was almost blacking out so I had to keep talking to myself.

Anyways the doc said it was good break so they just had to put a cast on it and it should heal up well. The break is near the ankle. The cast will be on for 6 weeks.

That is the true boring story of how I broke my leg. Slipping on the ice makes me sound like a old geezer with brittle bones so my more preferred story is this:

I saw a little kid drowning in the river so I dove in to save him but the water was to shallow. I broke my leg but got the kid and fought the undercurrents of the fierce North Thompson River to bring the child to safety. The child happened to be the Queens third cousins great nephew twice removed. Needless to say the Queen will be knighting me as “The Great Sir Orlund of the North Thompson” and giving me a gold medal for bravery. I will also be on the front of the Times magazine for Man of the decade.

Hmm… a little untrue but I think it makes me sound a little more heroic.

The other weekend we went to Davidson Orchards with some of our friends. It was Family week and so there was lots to do and see. Unfortunately there was also a rain storm that weekend too.

First there was piles and piles of pumpkins in the parking lot, on the side walks in bins and everywhere you went. There was every size available. We got my daughter Joy a tiny one. It was probably big enough to make a pumpkin pie the size of two or three tarts. My wife got a normal size one.

There was a pumpkin carving contest with a dozen or so pumpkins.

There were a couple of good ones but nothing to wild or extravagant. My favorite was a monster like carving with its tongue hanging out with two small squashes for horns.

Then inside was all sorts of things you could buy. A large selection of all kinds of apples and you could taste test them first. Next was jams, candles and all the things only your wife would buy.

The last section was for the men. Pies, candied apples and the checkout where you pay for everything your wife wants and your little daughter took off the shelf while you weren’t looking.

This week every one working in the store was dressed up like scarecrows. All I can say is I am glad I don’t have to dress up like that for work. All that was inside next we had to go outside into the rain.

Since it was raining we couldn’t go on the ride that takes you out to the pumpkin patch. Normally they take you out there and you can pick what ever pumpkin you like to take back with you. There was also a play area for kids that looked kind of cool but.. again.. kind of useless in the rain.

Maybe next year we can do those things but this year we could only go check out the animals.

Joy loves animals so she put up with the rain. There were rabbits hidding in there little boxes. Most of the goats were also staying under cover except for one little one who came to check us out. I think maybe he thought we had some food. Poor guy, got tricked into comming out and getting wet just so a little kid could pat his head.

There were also chickens and then there was one donkey. He looked exacly like Eor from Winnie the Pooh. His head hung low and you could almost hear him say “Oh dear, It’s raining again.

I guess thats just my luck.”

Well that concluded our trip to Davidson Orchards. After that we had lunch and did some shopping.

The only other thing worth mentioning was that our tire went flat and so we finnished the trip traveling probably 200 km on a little spare tire. I sware that donkey was following us because I could hear “Oh well, I guess if it’s going to rain it then the tire might as well go flat too”.

But it was a great trip and we plan to do it again some time weither it’s sunny or it rains.

Here is a bull statue with my new Canon 55mm F1.8 lens. After several months of shooting with only a 70-300mm lens my wife got me a 50mm lens for our Anniversary.

I have to say I like it a lot. It beats my kit lenses for sure. It’s clear, crisp and I like having the apature. It will take some time to get used to as all I shot with before was zoom lenses.

The zooms are nice for candid photos. I think getting those quick shots will be a little harder with this lens because I will have to move around more. With a zoom you can just stand there and be less of a distraction. On the other hand I can always crop.

The advantage of this lens is I like to avoid the flash when I can and this will let me shot in less light. Like I said before I like the apature and the bokeh you get. It will be just a matter of learning the lens and how to shoot with it.
